2017 Cabernet Franc
100% Cabernet Franc
Ripe dark fruit jumps out of the glass with plums, eucalyptus and chocolate notes. Bright on the palate with silky smooth tannins with dense cherry and chocolate notes lingering for a lengthy finish.
David Lawrason, 93 Points: This is a very well constructed, firm, balanced and complex cabernet franc built more for the future than the present. Although balanced so well that aeration makes it approachable now. Classic cab franc aromas of raspberry, tobacco, dried herbs and well sewn oak resin. It is full bodied, nicely streamlined, with firm, gritty tannin. The length is excellent. I would age this about three years, could live a decade. Tasted April 2020
John Szabo, MS 93 Points: Painted Rock's 2017 cab franc is a cracking wine, so evidently dense, deep and concentrated, structured but not overbearing, with a full complement of dark berry fruit, high quality oak spice, and a proper measured amount of roasted vegetal character. The tannic load is heavy, and will take some years, 2-3 at least, to drop and integrate, but this will be an excellent wine to be sure. Tasted April 2020.
Daenna Van Mulligen: It delivers aromas of black currents and plum compote, toasted spices and roasted bell peppers, bacon fat, dark cocoa and leather. Fresh berries lead the attack are followed followed by complex savoury flavours. Fleshy with sweet tannins, it's a balanced and succulent wine.

Fruit was hand picked from our single 3.01 acre vineyard block on Oct. 30, 3017 and berry sorted. Fruit was broken into small batches, cold soaked on the skins for four days and fermented for an additional 21 days on the skins in tank with twice daily pump overs. The batches were then barrel aged for 18 months in 40% new French oak and blended prior to bottling. Unfiltered.

The 2017 vintage began slower than 2016, with a cool and wet spring. This left bud burst delayed slightly, but the delays didn’t last long with the first official day of summer bringing with it a warm, dry summer with temperatures above average and below average rainfall. The result was small berries, ripe with complexity and deepconcentration. With small berries came lower juice yield and an overall smaller harvest. Expect this to be a stand out vintage for the Okanagan, though potentially hard to find given the smaller yield.
