Top 10 Syrah - WineAlign's Guide to Canada's Best Wines 2020

John Schreiner - 93 Points "Dark in the glass, this wine has aromas of cherry and plum. On the palate, there are flavours dark fruit, including figs, with crushed black pepper punctuating the finish. The wine was aged 18 months in French oak (30% new). The long, ripe tannins give it a generous texture."

Sara D'Amato - 93 Points "A meaty, peppery and spicy syrah offering a warming, velvety tannic approach. Opulent in mouthfeel and a touch jammy with pleasant bramble and elegant spice in the mix. A fresh vein of acidity permeates to the finish and adds balance and poise. Overall, the style is more complex and less imposing. Excellent length. Tasted June 2020."

John Szabo, MW - 93 Points " Inky-black colour. Ripe, sappy, voluminous aromatics engage off the top, featuring smoked blueberry pie, salami, blackberry jam and much more in a complex, and certainly intense expression, with more to be revealed in time no doubt. Nearly 15% alcohol declared (14.8%) is felt on the large-scaled, full-bodied palate, as with the thick, almost chewy, cut-with-a-knife texture. There's still much that needs to unfold in this wine, and the tense acids need time to relax, so cellar another 2-3 years minimum for maximum enjoyment. Excellent length. A genuine force of flavour. Tasted October 2020."

Daenna Van Mulligen "Harmonious, elegant, supple. A standout in Painted Rock's portfolio, the Syrah never fails to please me. Again this vintage it's a symphony of black raspberry and plums, espresso licorice, violets, baking spices, vanilla and white pepper. Sweet generous fruit dominates the palate and is supported by dark chocolate and cola spices. Supple and potent, it is also elegant and persistent. Pair: spicy chorizo pizza, smoked gouda and caramelized onion grilled cheese, cheese fondue or game."

VINTAGE REVIEW

The 2017 vintage began slower than 2016, with a cool and wet spring. This left bud burst delayed slightly, but the delays didn’t last long with the first official day of summer bringing with it a warm, dry summer with temperatures above average and below average rainfall. The result was small berries, ripe with complexity and deep concentration. With small berries came lower juice yield and an overall smaller harvest. Expect this to be a stand out vintage for the Okanagan, though potentially hard to find given the smaller yield.
