2016 Red Icon
Aged 18 months in 30% new French oak. A blend of 45% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Franc, 11% Malbec, 11% Petit Verdot and 9% Cabernet Sauvignon.
This wine invites you in with rich aromas of blackberry, dark plums, cassis and sweet spices. The palate, with its velvety tannins and high acid, offers bold and juicy black fruit layered with pepper, baking spices, vanilla and chocolate. Those who cellar this wine will be rewarded.
John Schreiner "The wine begins with aromas of blackberry, cassis and spice. The flavours are redolent with black cherry, blueberry and black raspberry mingled with subtle notes of chocolate. The tannins are long and silky." 95 Points
Michael Godel, Wine Align " Provided you are not hypnotized into consuming Painted Rock's Red Icon in the first 15 minutes of its opening I would highly recommend that you sip portions of it over a five day stretch. Keep the cork snug in between visits and store it at cellar temperature but only this exercise will teach you about the structural design. Merlot may be at the head with 44 per cent representation but all five Bordeaux grape varieties are key to the stratified layers of grace. Is it aromatic? Yes. Is the fruit great? Indeed, in fact the tenets of ripeness, extraction and maceration could not have been executed with better belief and acumen. What about acidity? Fine. Tannin? Super fine. Has Painted Rock previously made a more stylish or iconic wine? Probably but this is the Red Icon that has my current attention. For five days. Drink 2019-2029." 94 Points

Each vineyard block was individually hand picked and berry sorted. Blocks were then broken into small batches, cold soaked on their skins for four days and fermented for an additional 21 days on their skins in tank with twice daily pump overs. All batches are then barrel aged for 18 months in 30% new french oak. The barrels that were blended to create the Red Icon were chosen first for their specific attributes. The wine was blended prior to bottling, unfiltered.

The 2016 growing season started out early and similar to 2015 -hot hot hot. Both bud break and flowering were ahead of schedule in the spring with little rainfall, lots of sun and warm temperatures in both April and May. In June things became less consistent with more rain and lower temperatures. This weather continued through July with temperatures continuing to sit below the average for the first half of the month. It was mid-July before 'summer' seemed to kick back in with temperatures sitting around average for the rest of July, August and September.
