2016 Cabernet Sauvignon
100% Cabernet Sauvignon
Deliciously meaty aromas with notes of leather eucalyptus, black cherry, menthol and smoke. The wine is round and full on the palate with firm, ripe tannins. Red and dark fruit lingers on the finish with hints of baking spices and toasted oak. Elegant and sophisticated this wine will age beautifully.
John Schreiner "This elegantly polished wine begins with aromas of black cherry and cassis leading to flavours of cherry, blueberry. There is spice and toasted oak on the finish. This is a remarkably accessible wine for a young Cabernet Sauvignon, with ripe tannins." 93 Points
John Szabo "Notably fresh and herbal, even a touch green in a positive way, despite the late harvest (November 3rd), this launches in the customary Painted Rock reductive style, still tight and youthful, vibrant and fresh. I like the play on the palate, the verve and liveliness, in this fresher, mid-southern Okanagan site. Tannins offer their grip without excessive astringency, but still need another few years, 2-4, in the cellar to soften out. Length and depth are excellent. A fine vintage from Painted Rock, well crafted, honest. Best after 2022." 92 Points

Fruit was hand picked from our single 2.15 acre vineyard block on Oct. 22nd, 2015 and berry sorted. Fruit was broken into small batches, cold soaked on the skins for four days and fermented for an additional 21 days on the skins in tank with twice daily pump
overs. The batches were then barrel aged for 18 months in 30% new French oak and blended prior to bottling. Unfiltered.

The 2016 growing season started out early and similar to 2015 -hot hot hot. Both bud break and flowering were ahead of schedule in the spring with little rainfall, lots of sun and warm temperatures in both April and May. In June things became less consistent with more rain and lower temperatures. This weather continued through July with temperatures continuing to sit below the average for the first half of the month. It was mid-July before 'summer' seemed to kick back in with temperatures sitting around average for the rest of July, August and September.
